OEM Mopar Bumper Covers
Bumpers are designed to absorb much of the shock of an impact during an accident. Bumper covers, however, are fittings that covers them. Typically, they're made of plastic or fiberglass, they come in a variety of colors and styles, and you can get either universal or custom-fit variants.
What bumper covers do is reinforce the strength of your bumper, protecting your grille, fenders, headlights, taillights, and even your paint job in the process. They also give your vehicle's front and rear a sleeker, more finished appearance, a look that reflects your sense of style. They can even cover dents and dings as well as the effects of age. Some are also equipped with fog lights, if not mini grilles, too, which match a vehicle's larger grilles.
Bumper covers may be similar to air dams, but they aren't exactly the same thing. The former fit over an entire bumper, while the latter install below it. Some bumper covers do have air dams, though, and in incorporating both, they provide the benefits of both. Bumper covers are also different from the bumper overriders on older models. These are tubular metal bars that mounts on top of steel bumpers, makes the latter taller.
When to replace a bumper cover depends on its condition. If you've got one with a crack or breakage more than a few inches long, if it's punctured, or if it's just plain coming off and won't stay on, it's probably time for a change.
